Bethany Brings Birth Control Pills for Brooke

 INT. LIVING ROOM – EVENING

A soft golden light spills across the room. The atmosphere feels calm, but there’s an undercurrent of tension.

BETHANY stands near the window, her phone still in her hand. Her face is tight, thoughtful.

A suitcase lies open on the couch.

BROOKE kneels beside it, folding clothes, humming softly — unaware.

Bethany watches her… hesitant.

A deep breath.

She steps forward.

BETHANY
Brooke… can we talk for a second?

Brooke looks up, smiling casually.

BROOKE
Yeah, of course. What’s up?

Bethany walks closer, her expression serious now. She glances at the suitcase.

BETHANY
I heard about the trip… Panama City.

Brooke’s smile widens with excitement.

BROOKE
Yeah! It’s just a short getaway. I really needed it.

Bethany nods slowly, but her eyes show concern.

BETHANY
With friends?

A brief pause.

BROOKE
Yeah… friends.

Bethany notices the hesitation.

Silence lingers for a moment.

BETHANY
Brooke… I’m not judging you. I just… want you to be careful.

Brooke’s expression softens slightly, confused.

BROOKE
Careful about what?

Bethany reaches into her bag.

She pulls out a small packet.

Places it gently on the table between them.

Brooke’s eyes drop to it.

Her smile fades.

BROOKE
Bethany… what is this?

Bethany’s voice lowers, careful and controlled.

BETHANY
It’s just… something I thought you might need.

Brooke picks it up slowly.

Realization hits.

BROOKE
Birth control pills?

A heavy silence fills the room.

BROOKE (CONT’D)
You really think I need this?

Bethany quickly shakes her head.

BETHANY
No — that’s not what I’m saying.

She steps closer.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
I just don’t want you to end up in a situation you’re not ready for.

Brooke stands up now.

Her tone sharpens slightly.

BROOKE
So you think I’m irresponsible?

Bethany’s eyes widen.

BETHANY
No, Brooke. I think you’re human.

A beat.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
And sometimes… things happen faster than we expect.

Brooke looks away, processing.

Her grip tightens around the packet.

BROOKE
You don’t trust me.

Bethany softens, her voice almost breaking.

BETHANY
I trust you. I just don’t trust… every situation you might be in.

Silence.

The ticking of a wall clock grows louder.

Brooke exhales slowly.

BROOKE
You could’ve just talked to me.

BETHANY
I am talking to you.

Brooke shakes her head.

BROOKE
No… you’re preparing for the worst.

Bethany pauses.

Then, gently—

BETHANY
Because I care about you.

That lands.

Brooke looks at her — really looks this time.

Her anger fades into something softer.

BROOKE
You think something bad is going to happen?

Bethany hesitates.

BETHANY
I think… life doesn’t always give warnings.

A long pause.

Brooke walks back to the suitcase.

She sits down again.

The packet still in her hand.

BROOKE
You always do this.

BETHANY
Do what?

BROOKE
Try to protect everyone… even when they didn’t ask for it.

Bethany doesn’t respond.

Because it’s true.

BROOKE (CONT’D)
(quietly)
But… I guess that’s also why you’re you.

Bethany’s expression softens.

A faint, emotional smile.

Brooke looks at the pills again.

Then places them carefully inside her bag.

Bethany notices.

BETHANY
You don’t have to take them.

Brooke shrugs lightly.

BROOKE
Maybe not.

A small pause.

BROOKE (CONT’D)
But maybe it’s good to have a choice.

Bethany exhales — relief mixed with lingering worry.

She sits beside Brooke.

BETHANY
Just promise me one thing.

BROOKE
What?

BETHANY
No matter what happens… you call me.

Brooke smiles faintly.

BROOKE
Even if it’s 3 a.m.?

BETHANY
Especially if it’s 3 a.m.

They share a quiet laugh.

The tension melts — just a little.

Brooke zips her suitcase.

BROOKE
You worry too much.

BETHANY
And you don’t worry enough.

They exchange a look.

A balance between them.

BROOKE
Maybe that’s why we work.

Bethany nods.

BETHANY
Maybe.

A soft silence settles in.

Not uncomfortable — just real.

The clock continues ticking.

The trip is coming.

And so is everything that comes with it.

FADE OUT.
