Bethany Reveals Truth About Larry and Ex Wife

 INT. LIVING ROOM – EVENING

A dimly lit room. Soft yellow light spills from a corner lamp. The atmosphere feels heavy, almost suffocating.

BETHANY sits on the edge of the couch, her fingers nervously intertwined. Her eyes are restless, like she’s been holding something in for too long.

Across from her, her FATHER leans back in his chair, watching her carefully.

A long silence.

The ticking of a wall clock grows louder.

FATHER
(softly)
You’ve been quiet all day, Bethany. What’s on your mind?

Bethany exhales slowly, gathering courage.

BETHANY
(hesitant)
Dad… I need to tell you something. Something that’s been bothering me for a while.

Her father straightens, sensing the weight in her tone.

FATHER
I’m listening.

Bethany looks down, her voice trembling slightly.

BETHANY
It’s about Larry… and his ex-wife.

A subtle shift in the father’s expression. Concern replaces calm.

FATHER
What about them?

Bethany clenches her hands tighter.

BETHANY
I don’t like it. I really don’t.

She pauses, swallowing hard.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
The way they’re still involved… the way they stay together sometimes… it just doesn’t feel right to me.

The father leans forward, elbows on his knees.

FATHER
Stay together? What do you mean?

Bethany finally looks up, her eyes slightly glossy.

BETHANY
They spend time like… like nothing has changed. Like they’re still a part of each other’s lives in a way that crosses boundaries.

A beat.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
And I try to ignore it, I really do… but it hurts, Dad.

Her voice cracks.

The father studies her face—this isn’t jealousy alone. It’s deeper.

FATHER
(steady)
Have you talked to Larry about this?

Bethany shakes her head slowly.

BETHANY
No… because every time I think about it, I feel like I’ll sound insecure… or unreasonable.

She wipes the corner of her eye quickly, trying to stay composed.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
But I’m not imagining things, right? It’s not normal…

Her father sighs gently, choosing his words carefully.

FATHER
It depends on boundaries, Bethany. Some people stay connected after separation… but that connection should never make you feel uncomfortable.

Bethany nods faintly, absorbing his words.

BETHANY
Exactly. And this does. Every single time.

She stands up, pacing slowly.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
I see them talking, laughing… sometimes even making plans. And I just stand there wondering… where do I fit in all of this?

Her voice grows stronger, frustration surfacing.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
Am I supposed to just accept it?

The father rises too, calm but firm.

FATHER
No. You’re not supposed to accept something that hurts you.

Bethany stops pacing. His words hit her.

FATHER (CONT'D)
But you are supposed to communicate it.

A moment of silence.

Bethany looks conflicted.

BETHANY
What if he doesn’t understand?

FATHER
Then that tells you something important.

He steps closer, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

FATHER (CONT'D)
A relationship isn’t just about love. It’s about respect. About making each other feel secure.

Bethany’s eyes soften, but uncertainty still lingers.

BETHANY
I just… I don’t want to lose him.

Her father gives a faint, knowing smile.

FATHER
And you won’t lose the right person by speaking your truth.

Bethany takes a deep breath, steadying herself.

BETHANY
(quietly)
I’m scared, Dad.

FATHER
I know.

A pause.

FATHER (CONT'D)
But silence won’t fix this. It’ll only make it worse.

Bethany nods slowly.

She walks toward the window, looking out into the dark night.

The reflection of her face in the glass shows conflict… and growing determination.

BETHANY
Maybe I’ve been avoiding this for too long.

Her father watches her, proud yet concerned.

FATHER
What matters is what you do now.

Bethany turns back, her posture straighter.

BETHANY
I’ll talk to him.

A beat.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
I need to.

Her father nods approvingly.

FATHER
Good.

A soft silence fills the room again—but this time, it feels different. Lighter.

Bethany picks up her phone from the table, staring at it.

Her thumb hovers over Larry’s name.

She hesitates.

Then locks the phone.

BETHANY
Not over a call.

She looks at her father.

BETHANY (CONT'D)
I’ll say it to his face.

Her father smiles slightly.

FATHER
That’s my daughter.

Bethany takes one last deep breath, as if preparing for something inevitable.

FADE OUT.
