Bethany Tries To Stop Larry But He Refuses

EXT. HOUSE – EARLY MORNING

Cold air. Pale sunlight.

A quiet street that feels heavier than usual.

Larry steps out of the house with a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. His face is set—focused, distant.

Behind him—

The door creaks open softly.

Bethany steps out.

Barefoot.

Breathing uneven.

BETHANY
Larry… wait.

Larry pauses for a split second—

But doesn’t turn around.

LARRY
(quiet, firm)
I don’t have time for this.

He keeps walking.

Each step heavier than the last.

Bethany hurries after him.

BETHANY
Please… just listen to me.

LARRY
I’ve already heard enough.

He reaches his car.

Drops the bag in the backseat.

Bethany grabs his arm.

BETHANY
Don’t go.

Larry slowly pulls his arm away.

Doesn’t look at her.

LARRY
I have to.

BETHANY
No—you don’t. You’re choosing to.

That hits.

Larry finally turns.

Their eyes meet.

LARRY
You think this is a choice?

BETHANY
Then what is it? Running?

Silence.

Wind brushes past them.

LARRY
I’m trying to fix what’s broken.

BETHANY
By leaving everything behind?

Larry clenches his jaw.

LARRY
I’m not leaving everything.

BETHANY
You’re leaving me.

A beat.

Heavy.

Larry looks away.

LARRY
I’ll come back.

Bethany shakes her head.

Tears forming.

BETHANY
That’s what people always say.

She steps closer.

Voice breaking.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
And sometimes… they don’t.

Larry exhales.

Frustrated.

Conflicted.

LARRY
Bethany… this isn’t about you.

That lands wrong.

BETHANY
It’s always about us!

Her voice cracks through the silence.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
Or at least… it used to be.

Larry softens for a moment—

But then hardens again.

LARRY
I can’t stay.

Bethany wipes her tears quickly.

Trying to hold herself together.

BETHANY
Then don’t go like this.

He says nothing.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
Not angry. Not distant. Not… like you don’t care.

Larry finally looks at her properly.

LARRY
You think I don’t care?

BETHANY
Then show me.

A long pause.

The kind that says everything.

Larry steps closer.

Close enough to reach out—

But he doesn’t.

LARRY
If I stay… nothing changes.

BETHANY
And if you leave… everything might.

Their eyes lock.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
Including us.

Larry swallows hard.

LARRY
Maybe that’s already changed.

Bethany freezes.

The words cut deep.

BETHANY
So that’s it?

No answer.

Just silence.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
You’re giving up?

LARRY
I’m trying to do what’s right.

BETHANY
For who?

Another silence.

Larry looks at the car.

Then back at her.

LARRY
For everyone.

Bethany lets out a small, broken laugh.

BETHANY
That’s funny…

She steps back.

Shaking her head.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
Because it feels like it’s breaking everyone instead.

Larry’s grip tightens on the car door.

LARRY
I don’t expect you to understand.

BETHANY
Then help me understand!

Her voice echoes.

Raw.

Desperate.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
Don’t just walk away like this.

Larry hesitates.

For a moment—it looks like he might stay.

But then—

He opens the car door.

Bethany’s breath catches.

BETHANY
Larry… please.

He stops.

Hand on the door.

Eyes closed.

LARRY
(softly)
I’m sorry.

He gets in.

Door shuts.

The sound feels final.

EXT. HOUSE – CONTINUOUS

The engine starts.

Bethany stands frozen.

The car begins to move.

BETHANY
(whispers)
Don’t do this…

But it’s too late.

Larry drives off.

Not looking back.

Bethany takes a few steps forward—

Then stops.

Her strength gives out.

She sinks to her knees.

Tears fall freely now.

BETHANY (CONT’D)
You said you’d stay…

The road stretches empty ahead.

The car disappears in the distance.

Leaving silence behind.

CUT TO:

INT. CAR – MOVING – DAY

Larry drives.

Hands tight on the wheel.

Eyes forward.

But they’re not focused.

His jaw clenched.

Pain hidden beneath control.

He glances at the rearview mirror.

For a split second—

He slows.

Bethany, small and distant, still standing in the road.

Alone.

Larry’s grip tightens.

Conflict rising.

But then—

He looks forward again.

Presses the gas.

The car speeds up.

LARRY
(whispers)
I have to…

His voice barely holds.

CUT TO:

EXT. HOUSE – DAY

Bethany still on the ground.

Silent now.

Empty.

A piece of her gone with him.

FADE OUT.
