Kaylee Stops Bethany From Picking Up Her Baby

INT. KAYLEE AND JADEN’S LIVING ROOM – DAY

Soft sunlight filters through sheer curtains. The room is calm, almost too calm. A BABY lies peacefully in a crib, gently cooing.

KAYLEE stands nearby, watching protectively. Her arms are folded, her eyes sharp.

The front door creaks open.

BETHANY steps in, carrying a forced smile. Her eyes immediately lock onto the baby.

A tense silence fills the room.

BETHANY
(softly, almost emotional)
Wow… look at her. She’s gotten so big.

Kaylee doesn’t respond. She just watches.

Bethany slowly walks closer to the crib, her footsteps careful, almost hesitant.

BETHANY
I haven’t seen her in so long… I missed this.

She leans in, smiling at the baby.

The baby giggles.

Bethany’s face lights up.

BETHANY
(gently)
Hey, sweet girl… you remember me?

Kaylee shifts her stance. Subtle, but firm.

Bethany glances at Kaylee, then back at the baby.

A pause.

Then—

Bethany slowly reaches her hands toward the baby.

KAYLEE
(firm, cutting through the silence)
Don’t.

Bethany freezes mid-motion.

The air instantly tightens.

BETHANY
(confused, trying to laugh it off)
What?

KAYLEE
You heard me. Don’t pick her up.

Bethany slowly lowers her hands, her expression shifting from soft to hurt.

BETHANY
Kaylee… it’s just me. I just want to hold her.

KAYLEE
(cold)
No. You can’t.

Silence.

Bethany takes a small step back, processing the rejection.

BETHANY
Why are you acting like this?

Kaylee steps closer to the crib, placing her hand protectively on its edge.

KAYLEE
Because I don’t trust you.

The words land heavy.

Bethany’s eyes widen slightly.

BETHANY
(disbelief)
You don’t trust me… with a baby?

KAYLEE
Not just any baby. My baby.

Bethany exhales sharply, trying to stay calm.

BETHANY
Kaylee, I would never hurt her.

KAYLEE
(slightly raised voice)
It’s not about hurting her. It’s about boundaries.

Bethany looks away for a moment, jaw tightening.

BETHANY
So now I need permission to show love?

KAYLEE
Yes. From me.

A beat.

The tension grows thicker.

JADEN enters from the hallway, sensing the energy immediately.

JADEN
What’s going on?

Bethany turns to him, clearly frustrated.

BETHANY
Tell her I can hold the baby. This is ridiculous.

Jaden looks between them, cautious.

JADEN
Kaylee?

Kaylee doesn’t break eye contact with Bethany.

KAYLEE
I said no.

JADEN
(gently)
Kaylee, maybe—

KAYLEE
(interrupting)
No, Jaden.

Her tone is final.

Jaden sighs, conflicted.

Bethany shakes her head, hurt turning into anger.

BETHANY
Wow. So this is what we’re doing now?

No one answers.

The baby starts to fuss, sensing the tension.

Kaylee immediately picks her up, rocking her gently.

KAYLEE
(softly to the baby)
It’s okay… mommy’s here.

Bethany watches, her eyes lingering.

A mix of longing and pain.

BETHANY
(quietly)
I just wanted a moment with her.

Kaylee doesn’t respond.

She keeps rocking the baby, turning slightly away.

That small movement feels like a wall.

BETHANY
(voice cracking slightly)
I didn’t think you’d shut me out like this.

Kaylee finally looks at her.

KAYLEE
You shut yourself out.

Silence.

Bethany takes a step back, stunned.

BETHANY
That’s not fair.

KAYLEE
Maybe not. But it’s how it is.

Jaden steps forward, trying to ease things.

JADEN
Let’s just calm down—

BETHANY
(raising her hand)
No. I get it now.

She nods slowly, swallowing her emotions.

BETHANY
I know where I stand.

Bethany grabs her bag from the couch.

The room feels colder.

JADEN
Bethany, wait—

BETHANY
(shaking her head)
No. I won’t force myself where I’m not wanted.

She glances one last time at the baby.

A soft, broken smile.

BETHANY
Take care of her.

Kaylee doesn’t respond.

Bethany turns and walks toward the door.

Her footsteps echo louder than before.

She opens the door—

Pauses.

For a second, it feels like she might turn back.

But she doesn’t.

She walks out.

The door closes.

Silence.

The baby softly coos again.

Jaden looks at Kaylee.

JADEN
You didn’t have to be that harsh.

Kaylee keeps rocking the baby, her expression unreadable.

KAYLEE
Yes… I did.

Jaden exhales, unsure.

The camera lingers on Kaylee holding the baby tightly.

Protective.

Unyielding.

But in her eyes—

A flicker of doubt.

FADE OUT.
