Larry Breaks Down Holding Divorce Papers in Shock

 INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

Dim light spills from a flickering lamp. Shadows stretch across the walls like silent witnesses.

A heavy silence suffocates the room.

LARRY sits on the couch, hunched forward. A brown coat hangs loosely on his tired frame. His hands tremble slightly as he grips a set of divorce papers. His eyes scan the words again… and again… as if refusing to believe them.

A long pause.

Paper rustles faintly in his grip.

Across from him—

BETHANY stands firm. Blue shirt, rigid posture. Her face is tight with anger, eyes burning. She raises her hand—

Points directly at Larry.

BETHANY
(voice sharp, controlled anger)
You thought I wouldn’t do it, didn’t you?

Larry doesn’t respond.

He keeps staring at the papers.

BETHANY
(louder)
Say something, Larry!

Larry exhales slowly… his voice barely escapes.

LARRY
(quiet, broken)
This… this isn’t real.

A beat.

Bethany scoffs, shaking her head.

BETHANY
Oh, it’s real. Every word of it.

Behind Larry—

JADEN and LYNETTE stand frozen.

Jaden, in a black hoodie, stares wide-eyed. His jaw clenched, confusion written all over his face.

Lynette, in a grey coat, holds her arms close to herself. Her expression is a mix of shock and quiet sorrow.

They exchange a quick glance—neither knowing what to say.

Back to Larry—

He lowers the papers slightly, finally looking up.

His eyes meet Bethany’s.

There’s pain there. Deep. Raw.

LARRY
(soft, trembling)
After everything… this is how it ends?

Bethany steps closer.

Her finger still pointed.

BETHANY
No.
(firm)
This is how it needed to end.

Larry shakes his head slowly, disbelief turning into hurt.

LARRY
You didn’t even try to talk to me.

BETHANY
(frustrated laugh)
Talk? Larry, I’ve been talking for years!

She gestures around the room.

BETHANY
You just never listened.

Silence falls again.

The clock ticks loudly somewhere in the house.

Larry looks back down at the papers.

His grip tightens.

LARRY
(whispers)
I didn’t think you’d actually leave.

Bethany’s expression flickers—just for a moment—then hardens again.

BETHANY
That was your mistake.

Behind him, Jaden takes a small step forward… then stops.

Uncertain.

JADEN
(softly)
Dad…

Larry doesn’t turn.

Doesn’t move.

Lynette gently places a hand on Jaden’s arm, stopping him from going further.

LYNETTE
(whisper)
Not now…

Jaden swallows hard, nodding slightly.

Back in front—

Bethany lowers her hand, but her stance remains firm.

BETHANY
I’m done waiting for you to change.

Larry finally stands.

Slowly.

The papers crumple slightly in his hand as he rises.

He looks smaller now… defeated.

LARRY
And what about them?

He gestures faintly toward Jaden and Lynette without turning.

LARRY
What am I supposed to tell them?

Bethany crosses her arms.

BETHANY
Tell them the truth.

A beat.

BETHANY
That sometimes love isn’t enough.

That line lands heavy.

Jaden looks down, struggling to process.

Lynette’s eyes glisten.

Larry’s face tightens.

He takes a step toward Bethany… then stops halfway.

Like something invisible is holding him back.

LARRY
(voice cracking)
You’re really walking away.

Bethany doesn’t hesitate.

BETHANY
Yes.

Silence.

Thick. Uncomfortable. Final.

Larry nods slowly.

Accepting it… or at least trying to.

He looks at the papers one last time.

Then lowers them to his side.

LARRY
(quiet, defeated)
I guess… there’s nothing left to say.

Bethany watches him.

No anger now.

Just distance.

BETHANY
No.

Another pause.

Jaden steps forward this time, unable to hold back.

JADEN
(voice shaky)
This can’t just end like this…

No one answers him.

No one knows how.

Lynette looks away, wiping a tear quickly.

Larry turns slightly… just enough to glance at them.

His eyes soften.

Regret. Guilt. Pain.

But he says nothing.

Bethany grabs her bag from a chair nearby.

The small sound echoes loudly in the quiet room.

She walks toward the door.

Stops for a moment—

Without turning back.

BETHANY
(soft, almost to herself)
It’s over, Larry.

And then—

She exits.

The door closes.

A hollow sound.

The room feels emptier instantly.

Larry stands still.

Frozen.

Jaden and Lynette remain behind him… unsure, shaken.

The ticking clock grows louder.

Larry slowly sinks back onto the couch.

The divorce papers slip from his hand… falling to the floor.

He stares ahead.

Empty.

Lost.

FADE OUT.
